Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, Thursday 21, 2013 - The Department of Transport (DoT) commenced on "Park and Ride" service at Al Khubeirah area, in Sector 45 West, located between Corniche Road North and Fifth Street South and Sixth Street East and Twelve Street West, for government and private sectors staff, in a move to reduce congestion, implement sustainable travel options and provide effective car parking solutions to the public in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The move comes as part of DoT's Transportation Mobility Management Strategy (TMM). The main objective of the strategy is to improve the way of travel, making Abu Dhabi an attractive, efficient and healthier place for the public. As part of the strategy, DoT will seek inputs from key stakeholders and work with local organisations and businesses to develop transport mobility management plans.
The Department of Transport has allocated five hundred (500) parking spaces with a total area of 19,620 square meter provided by the DoT, marked with "Mawaqif" curbstones painted in turquoise, in addition to signage to direct the employees, to large organizations based in Abu Dhabi's Central Business District (CBD). Through this service, DoT aims to transport a large number of employees to their work-place using transport provided by each organization such as First Gulf Bank. Moreover, DoT will provide these companies' employees with permits to enter and park their vehicles, where "Mawaqif" inspectors will manage and facilitate traffic. The service will run at 7:00am to 7:00pm from Sunday through Thursday. This service will save twenty minutes to half an hour from staff time to reach their destination.
Based on the demand, DoT will study the provision of the "Park and Ride" service for employees in different areas within the city of Abu Dhabi and its suburbs.
To enhance coordination and integration with government and private sectors, all organizations can sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Transport for the "Park and Ride" service to reduce the use of private cars and encourage the public to use public transportation.
DoT is considering the public transport needs in Abu Dhabi and seeks to address related issues through sustainable public transport. Moreover, DoT is developing strategies and policies for transport management to make Abu Dhabi a leading city with world-class infrastructure and transportation systems.
The Department of Transport (DoT) was established pursuant to Law No. 4 of year 2006, amended by Law No. 5 of year 2008 to cover the entire value chain and ensure fully coordinated planning in all aspects of transport policy and development in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in cooperation with all relevant local, regional and international stakeholders and partners.
