Over 50,000 visit exhibition; mall extends show until end of DSF 2003 due to popular demand

Original costumes worn by the stars of the Hollywood epic Titanic are now on display at the Titanic Exhibition at the BurJuman Centre. They have been shown around the world and are now being presented in the Middle East for the first time at the unique exhibition at BurJuman, that tells the story of the world's most famous ship.

Organisers have now added to the exhibition costumes from the film set of TITANIC. The collection features, amongst others, Rose DeWitt Bukater’s boarding suit  (played by Kate Winslet) and her famous Flying Dress from the scene at the bow of the ship “flying” witb Jack. Also on display is one of Jack Dawson’s costumes (Leonardo DiCaprio) as featured in the flying scene and during the final moments of the disaster that struck the giant luxury transatlantic liner.

In the two months since it opened, more than 50,000 people, mostly families and children, from all over the world, have visited the exhibition. Designed in the shape of a ship painted in the Titanic’s colours, the exhibition occupies a central area of the mall on Level 2.

The exhibition, which includes artifacts from the ship, is the first major Titanic Exhibition to be brought to the Middle East. It was launched in October at BurJuman for an initial period of six weeks, but because of its huge popularity among visitors to the mall, it has been extended until the end of DSF 2003 on February 15th.

Sabina Khandwani, Head of Research and Marketing of BurJuman, said: “The exhibition has become such a big hit among visitors to our mall that we felt it necessary to extend the event and introduce new elements including costumes from the film. I am sure the sight of these costumes will bring back memories for the thousands of our customers who saw the epic film".

She added: "Having the exhibition until the end of DSF will also provide thousands of more visitors to Dubai, especially from the GCC countries, the opportunity to have a first hand insight into the story that has captured the hearts of, and touched millions of people around the world”.

The exhibition about the fateful voyage of the giant steamship has been specially created and flown in from the United Kingdom exclusively for BurJuman. It is also believed to be the first time in the world that a Titanic exhibition has been held in a shopping mall outside North America.

The exhibition features select artifacts salvaged from the scene of the tragedy, items that belonged to some of the 705 people who survived; a number of objects made specially for the Titanic and its sister ship the Olympic, and exclusive new underwater film footage from a recent dive to the wreck that lies 2.5 miles beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

Other displays show the luxury lifestyle enjoyed by Titanic guests; human interest stories of Titanic passengers and crew and a computer generated film that shows the devastating effects of the iceberg and how the Titanic broke up and sank.

It also features a replica of the Marconi radio room that sent out the desperate SOS message for help after the Titanic struck the iceberg and began to sink.  This message reached a nearby ship allowing the rescue of the 705 survivors. But a total of 1503 passengers and crew of the Titanic were to die in the tragedy.

Sir Rodney Walker, Chairman of Titanic Exhibitions Ltd, said:  “We are delighted with the fantastic public response to this exhibition at BurJuman Centre. It is ample testimony to the universal interest in the Titanic. By introducing the collection of costumes used in the film set of Titanic, the exhibition highlights an important part of the story and drama involving the passengers and crew who sailed on the Titanic”.

During DSF the exhibition is open 7-days a week from 10:00am to 10:00pm from Saturday to Thursday and from 4:00pm to 10:00pm on Fridays. Catch it prior to DSF from 2:00pm to 10:00pm, Saturday to Thursday and on Friday between 4:00pm and 10:00pm. Last tickets are sold at 21:45.
