The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the UAE has officially recognised the Cambridge English Scale - which is a new way of reporting results for Cambridge English exams - when accepting Cambridge English: Advanced.

Universities in the UAE can now accept Cambridge English: Advanced with a minimum overall scale score of 154 for undergraduate admissions, and 169 for graduate admissions. This is equivalent in level to IELTS band scores of 5.0 and 6.0.

Zara Shahid Khan, Marketing Manager UAE & Gulf, commented that 'the Cambridge English Scale offers universities a much clearer picture of candidate performance which really helps them with their admissions decisions. The scale is a single range of scores which clearly shows how results compare to other Cambridge English exams, including IELTS, and against international standards.'

Cambridge English: Advanced has been used by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research since 2013 as evidence of the English language skills required to study at universities in the UAE. The Cambridge English Scale provides universities with more precise information on a student's linguistic abilities. The scale was launched in January this year and is designed to complement the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFR). IELTS*, which is produced by Cambridge English Language Assessment, has also been mapped to the scale.

Students with Cambridge English: Advanced qualifications predating the launch of the Cambridge English Scale can still use their results in UAE university applications - provided they have achieved a minimum standardised score of 41 for undergraduate admissions, or 52 for graduate admissions. These are the scores approved by the Ministry since 2013 and are equivalent to their approved IELTS scores.

*IELTS is jointly owned and managed by the British Council, IDP: Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.
