DUBAI – Cabo Verde aims to use Expo 2020 Dubai to showcase the African country’s aspirations to become a global tourism, culture and economic hub, His Excellency Jose Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva, Prime Minister of Cabo Verde, said during his visit to his country’s Expo 2020 Dubai National Day celebrations today (3 February).

HE Jose Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva was welcomed by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence and Commissioner General of Expo 2020 Dubai.

HE Jose Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva said: “Cabo Verde is a small island developing state, a nation with five-and-a-half centuries of history, with a large diaspora in the US, Europe and Africa, resilient and committed to the goals of sustainable development.

“We aspire to be a touristic, cultural, aeronautical, maritime, digital and financial hub in Africa, and from Africa, to the rest of the world… It is to introduce ourselves as we are, with our identity, culture and ambition for development that we are here at this landmark Expo 2020 Dubai.”

Describing Cabo Verde as a country where everyone can feel safe and comfortable, he said: “We are working to translate that feeling into economic value in a stable, safe and reliable country. We are a liberal constitutional democracy, a cosmopolitan people and an economy that is open to the world… We are eager to strengthen political and diplomatic dialogue, and economic relations, with the United Arab Emirates.”

HE Sheikh Nahayan said: “Cabo Verde is using Expo 2020 Dubai to showcase to the world its potential as a hub for investors and businesses, while also emphasising the importance of youth for its development, and highlighting the diversity and richness of its people and cultures.

“The UAE and Cabo Verde enjoy a thriving relationship, and we have witnessed increased cooperation across an array of fields, and seen trade relations grow exponentially over a short span of time. Through the vast opportunities of this Expo, we hope to forge new partnerships and galvanise every prospect to enhance our bilateral ties.”

Cabo Verde’s National Day was also marked by a magnificent performance in Al Wasl Plaza’s garden, featuring 11 of the country’s best musicians, who presented an exciting and colourful show that had audience members up on their feet and dancing along to the beat.

HE Jose Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva then held a media briefing with local and international press, where he highlighted Coba Verde’s vast and rapidly-growing investment opportunities and development projects.

“We are interested in attracting investors, and have plans to hold investment forums to showcase all the opportunities that we have. It will give investors a chance to learn about the market. It may be small, but there is more than the internal market in Coba Verde. That is because our strategic location positions us as a hub and gateway to many countries as well when it comes to air transportation, tourism, maritime activities, digital activities, economy, and so on,” the Prime Minister said.

The Cabo Verde Pavilion showcases the nation – a cluster of 10 volcanic islands off West Africa – as a place of stunning contrasts: lush valleys, picture-perfect beaches and rugged coastlines. Visitors can learn about the country’s cultural past and the opportunities that exist there today.

National and Honour Days at Expo 2020 Dubai are moments to celebrate each of Expo 2020 Dubai’s 200-plus International Participants, shining a light on their culture and achievements, and showcasing their pavilions and programming.

Running until 31 March, Expo 2020 invites visitors from across the planet to join the making of a new world in a six-month celebration of human creativity, innovation, progress and culture.
