52 pedestrian recycling centers have been placed on the Sharjah Corniche
Enthusiastic public response, with high rates of correct usage
Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Bee'ah, the Sharjah Environment Company, today announced the installation and operation of 52 pedestrian recycling centers on the Sharjah Corniche. Placement of the recycling centers was completed on November 7 as one of the initial phases of introducing recycling facilities to the public in the Emirate of Sharjah. The public response has been encouraging, with the bins being used heavily and with a high correct usage rate.
The recycling stations comprise a metal bin, divided into three segments: one for paper products, one for drinks containers and one for all other waste. The different segments have been clearly labelled with images and text in seven languages (Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu, Tagalag, Russian and Chinese), allowing pedestrians to quickly and easily place their waste in the appropriate segment. The public response has been so positive that Bee'ah has already collected more than 3,000 kilograms of recyclable material from the 52 bins in the first five weeks. Use of the bins has been accompanied by a correct usage rate of 80%, which is on par with other, longer-established facilities elsewhere in the world.
Mr. Samer Kamal, Managing Director of Bee'ah, The Sharjah Environment Company said, "I am so excited to see these containers in place and I am delighted to know that they are being used with such enthusiasm by the public. The placement of the 3-stream pedestrian recycling centers on the Sharjah Corniche is a huge milestone for Sharjah and for us at Bee'ah. This is the first time that recycling facilities have been readily available to the people of Sharjah, allowing them to demonstrate their desire to play a positive role in improving the environment."
From these bins alone, seventy 96 litre bags of recyclable materials are being collected each day. Once collected, all recyclable materials are transported to a secure facility, where they are sorted, audited, weighed and stored. After auditing, these materials will be sent out to recycling facilities for the manufacture of new products. Information collected from the auditing stage will help Bee'ah design the recycling programs that will be rolled out to other areas in Sharjah.
Mr. Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah City Municipal Council, commented, "The bins are extremely easy to use and I find myself automatically placing all of my recyclable waste into the appropriate bin segment. It's comforting to know that my small actions are making a big difference to the health of our environment, yet require no extra effort on my part."
On average, each occupant of the United Arab Emirates throws away 600kg of recyclable material every year - enough material to cover four average-sized parking spaces to a height of one meter. Small actions, such as placing recyclables in the correct segment at recycling facilities, can be of immediate benefit to the environment.
Following on from their Commercial Recycling Program initiative, the availability of recycling bins to the public is the next practical step towards achieving the mission of Bee'ah: to turn Sharjah into a 'green' Emirate with sustainable environmental best practices.
