Dubai, United Arab Emirates - 5 November 2007 - Bee'ah, The Sharjah Environment Company today announced that it has already collected 2800 kilograms of recyclable waste from the Al Batha Tower, on the Sharjah Corniche, over a period of just six weeks. Being the first initiative of its kind in the Emirate of Sharjah, the recently launched 'Commercial Recycling Program' will allow businesses in Sharjah to recycle their office waste.
Tenants of Al Batha Tower have given the pilot scheme an enthusiastic welcome. Ralph Oliver of London, one commercial tenant, said, "The program has been very easy to take part in as there's just one container for all recyclable materials, which was delivered to us. It's now second nature for everyone here to put recyclable materials into the container and we simply drop the recyclables into the waste chute. We spend no extra time in doing our bit to help create a better environment."
Many business towers are located across the Emirate of Sharjah, and their full participation in the Bee'ah Commercial Recycling Program would represent a significant step towards the aim of Bee'ah to divert approximately 400,000 tons of waste from Sharjah landfills every year; an enormous reduction.
Mr. Samer Kamal, Managing Director, Bee'ah, The Sharjah Environment Company said, "The Bee'ah Commercial Recycling initiative has already proven to be a huge success in just six weeks. We have been very happy with the cooperation of all companies and tenants in the Al Batha Tower, who have participated fully in the recycling initiative. With 2800 kilograms of recyclable waste having already been collected, the prospect of rolling out the 'Commercial Recycling Program' to the rest of Sharjah is extremely exciting."
The implementation of Bee'ah's Commercial Recycling program is based on three basic principles which will provide a comprehensive approach to environmental education and recycling adoption in the commercial sector: Reduce - waste prevention, or "source reduction", by consuming and throwing away less; Reuse - reusing items where possible; and Recycle - turning materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources. The success of the Al Batha Tower phase of the program is the positive beginning of a much larger movement that will both, reduce waste and help control waste management costs.
Mr. Kamal continued, "The success of this pilot initiative is a huge milestone in the launch of the Commercial Recycling program and it brings us one step closer to fulfilling our ultimate mission, to transform Sharjah into a 'green' Emirate, with sustainable environmental best practices."
