Manama, Bahrain – Under the patronage of H.E. Engineer Kamal bin Ahmed Mohamed, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and in close co-operation with the airport community and partner companies, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the operator and managing body of Bahrain International Airport (BIA) launched the 6th Edition of its Annual Safety Week under the theme of ‘Safety is in Our Hands’ in light of the surge in construction activity on the new BIA Passenger Terminal Building and the overall Airport Modernization Program.

BAC’s 2016 safety drive was commemorated with an opening ceremony at the Movenpick Hotel in Muharraq and was attended by key representatives from the airport community. Guests included H.E. Mr. Mohamed Thamir Al Kaabi, Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs and respective Chief Executive Officers of Bahrain Airport Services and Bahrain Airport Company.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Thamir Al Kaabi, Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs praised the efforts of all BIA staff and partners in adhering to the best safety practices in their respective areas in helping BAC further its mission to sustain the airport’s reputation as an efficient and above all safe workplace and environment. H.E. Mr. Mohamed Thamir Al Kaabi  said “Safety at BIA is a top priority and there is no room for error; as Bahrain’s international gateway it is our responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone accessing our airport, whether it’s our staff, passengers or customer airlines”.

Mr. Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, Chief Executive Officer of Bahrain Airport Company further reinforced the safety goals established for the Airport Modernization Program and added: “Your participation in BIA Safety Week 2016 is a great example of your continuous support in realizing our mission. I am pleased to inform you that since the start of the Airport Modernization Program we have achieved over 2.95 Million hours free of Lost-Time Injuries (LTI). With the progression of the AMP Main Works we are further endorsing the significance of shared responsibility”.

This year BAC also hosted the second edition of the “BAC HSSE Excellence Awards” in recognition of select individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to preserving safety in their respective areas, preventing possible adverse situations and promoting safety culture in their working environment.

The 2016 Safety Campaign will run for a week and will include a series of activities such as panel discussions, site visits, inspections and training, interactive educational dialogues and activities for all staff across the airport airside and construction worksites. In addition to aviation security awareness activities and a FOD Safety Walk.

BAC is the authority responsible for enhancing BIA and increasing the airport’s contribution to the local economy in line with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.  In its operational role, BAC is responsible for elevating the airport’s operations, infrastructure and services. This is set to improve BIA’s capabilities and cater to the growing number of passengers, as well as the changing demands of stakeholders.
