Abu Dhabi, April 18, 2012- In order to improve the quality of school-based health services in public schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, School Health Services, a subsidiary of Ambulatory Healthcare Services (a SEHA HealthSystem Facility), and Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) launched a leadership and management training course for school charge nurses.
SEHA is contracted by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to provide preventative and curative school based health services in all 268 public schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Mr. Rashid Saif Al Qubaisi, Ambulatory Healthcare Services Chief Executive Officer, commented "The School Health Services has recently introduced the School Health Charge Nurse Position, whereby each charge nurse will be responsible for 20-25 schools and will be responsible for assessing and upgrading the competency level of the school nurses. Additionally, charge nurses will supervise health initiatives by school nurses, and enhance health education and promotion activities at schools. As of now, 6 charge nurses from Abu Dhabi city, 6 from Al Ain, and 2 charge nurses from the western region have been appointed."
Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Mubarak Al-Darmaki, Health Section Manager, School Operations Sector, ADEC, said: "ADEC and SEHA foresee the need for charge nurses in order to unify all nursing practices and to raise the quality of services provided to pupils at school. Charge nurses will mentor and provide all the needed support for a group of nurses. This training will equip the charge nurses with the skills needed for the new role. Moreover, the charge nurses will work to encourage nurses to come forward and share their thoughts, experiences and ideas for advancing school health."
The course is divided into 3 modules: Understanding nursing management, key skills in nursing management, and quality management. The course aims to develop the charge nurses' knowledge and skills, enable them to utilize best practices in nursing management and apply this knowledge in school based health projects.
Through this course, charge nurses will learn to identify the differences between leadership and management, manage staff performance, implement key skills in nursing management, and learn methods to improve the quality of school based health services.
The program began on April 10, 2012 and will continue till June 19, 2012. It will be conducted every Tuesday at the AHS Head office and will be delivered through a blend of lectures, discussions, case studies and projects. The topics will be presented by a group of expert professionals.
As part of the learning objectives of the course, charge nurses will be asked to prepare projects based on latest practices and literature.
