Ruler of Dubai ordered the construction of this hospital as a gift to the children of the UAE.
The 200 bed hospital won the award in 'Future Health Projects' in the World Architecture Festival (WAF) out of 210 entries from around the world.
State-of-the-art paediatric hospital is the only one of its kind hospital in the region which will specialise in paediatric care.
Hospital to have a helipad and is designed keeping in mind parameters of a 'Green Building' to promote the concept of saving energy.
Architectural visionary Sir Peter Cook presents the award to a DHA member in Barcelona. Award based on criteria such as functionality of the building, firmness and delight.
Dubai, 3 November, 2009: The Al Jalila Children's Speciality Hospital won the first place in the category of 'Future Health Projects' at the prestigious World Architecture Festival in Barcelona, Spain, which took place from the 4th to the 6th of November, 2009.
The World Architecture Festival is one of the most important events which highlight architectural work from around the globe. It is a platform where the world's architectural visionaries come together every year.
The 200 bed hospital, which will specialise in paediatric care, won the Future Health Projects award at the festival.
His Excellency Qadhi Saeed Al Muroosdhid, Director General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) said "It is a privilege to get recognition at an international level where the very best architectural projects across the world compete with each other. The hospital is a vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and is the only specialised hospital for children in the region."
"The project is a noble project for it will specialise in paediatric care and to win an award at a platform where the best critics in the field of architecture from come together, certainly gives us a sense of achievement and encourages us to further excel in the field of healthcare projects."
Al Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Hospital was ordered to be built by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai as a gift to the children of the UAE.
Dr Mohammad Al Olama, CEO of the Hospital Services Sector at the DHA received this award at the WAF in Barcelona from the great architectural visionary, Sir Peter Cook.
Al Olama said, "The UAE faced stringent competition from around the world. The WAF received 210 entries in the Future Health Projects category, are we are pleased that our project received this award. It means that we have selected the right talent pool for this project and we are on the right track. The selection was based on all parameters such as functionality of the building, firmness, delight, which takes into account the appeal and how pleasing the design of the building is. We are glad that we have excelled in these criterions and we will continue to strive to do better."
Of the 210 entries from the world, 94 were selected and finally only two projects were shortlisted- The Al Jalila Children's Speciality Hospital which represented the UAE and the Extension of Islamia Eye Hospital which represented Bangladesh.
Al Olama said, "Fifty-two judges from around the world reviewed the competitors."
Once completed in 2011, the hospital will be a state-of-the-art building 200 bed children's hospital with a full-fledged Emergency Department and Outpatient Department supported by a comprehensive Imaging and Radiology Department, Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Laboratory Department, Hospital Pharmacy, Rehabilitation Services and several others specialises.
Furthermore, the design of the hospital takes into account energy saving strategies to facilitate reductions in the global energy consumption.
More than 5,000 m2 of solar panels will be located in the roof of the hospital and will cover the parking places. In addition; the water treatment concept will facilitate reusing water for specific purposes like irrigation.
Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital will have a dedicated Helipad, which will be located in the east part of the external garden and will be directly connected with the Emergency Department to accommodate any type of paediatric emergencies excluding Road Traffic Accidents.
The award provides a major boost to this project, which is highly specialised and has been designed keeping in mind the future needs of paediatric care in mind.
