Automated storage and dispensing system helps improve medication safety and medication management efficiency

Carefusion participates at 6th Medication Safety Conference in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, U.A.E, 22 November 2013

CareFusion, a leading global medical technology company, today announced that Universal Hospital in Abu Dhabi, UAE, will be the first hospital in the Middle East region to implement the Rowa Smart® system in its hospital pharmacy.

The Rowa Smart system is an automated system that stores and dispenses pharmaceutical products within a pharmacy. Products are scanned and placed on a conveyor belt where a robotic arm grabs the package and stores it on an internal shelf within the system. When that pharmaceutical is then ready to be dispensed, the robotic arm retrieves it and dispenses it within seconds. The system saves both storage space and time in stocking and dispensing medications, it gives inventory transparency and helps to make workflows more efficient.

"We see countless benefits in implementing the Rowa Smart system in our private hospital," said Dr. Shabeer Nellikode, managing director of Universal Hospital in Abu Dhabi. "Medication delivery errors due to misreading of prescriptions and other human errors cause hundreds of thousands of adverse reactions and deaths around the world every year. The introduction of Rowa® technologies at Universal Hospital helps to prevent these errors and introduces a new era in patient safety in the region. The system further cuts down on the man hours lost in waiting for the medication to be dispensed. The combination of Rowa technologies with Universal Hospital's drug interaction and e-prescription processes helps ensure the highest level of patient safety and comfort levels in the region."

The Rowa Smart system comes in standard sizes that fit into almost any pharmacy and creates the optimum price-to-performance ratio for an affordable, yet highly productive and efficient system. The system has a capacity of up to 14,200 packages and can pick and dispense up to eight packages at a time: This is an adequate supply for small- to medium-sized retail or hospital pharmacies. It is simple to install and can be implemented and ready to use in just two days.

"Rowa technologies are an ideal choice for high performing hospital pharmacies as well as retail pharmacies" said Ian Milburn, Middle East regional director for CareFusion. "We are also pleased to be working closely with our local partner, Virtus Trading LLC, U.A.E. who has successfully introduced this product into the Middle Eastern market."

Anil Pinto, executive director of Virtus Trading LLC, U.A.E. added, "Introducing innovative technologies to improve pharmacy automation and enhance medication safety is a strategic focus for our company. We anticipate a high level of interest for Rowa technologies in the region."

CareFusion will be exhibiting with Alaris®, Pyxis® and Rowa® technologies its latest medication management solutions at the 6th Medication Safety Conference being held 22-24 Nov. at the Intercontinental Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
