Al Aen: As part of the extensive array of services and procedures provided by the Urology Department at Tawam Hospital, part of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, (SEHA), the medical team at the hospital was successful in preserving a 30-year-old woman’s kidney.
Upon visiting Tawam Hospital and after thorough medical assessments, the patient was diagnosed with uretero-pelvic junction obstruction. This is caused by a narrowing of the ureter, leading to urine drainage to the bladder and enlargement of the kidney.
Patients who suffer from such conditions are sometimes advised to remove the affected kidney however the medical team at Tawam Hospital opted to perform minimally invasive reconstruction surgery.
Dr Aftab Ahmad Bhatti, Consultant Urologist, Tawam Hospital, who performed the surgery, said, “Uretero-pelvic junction obstruction is a curable condition. By adopting a minimally invasive approach, we were able to achieve the same outcomes as an open procedure while avoiding large scaring. Instead, we were able to successfully resolve the obstruction while leaving the patient with smaller cuts in strategic locations, making them less visible. The minimally invasive approach also results in reduced hospital stay, normally 24-48 hours, early recovery, reduced pain and complications during and after the surgery.”
The patient, who was pleased with the outcome said, “I had been suffering for quite sometime and I was frustrated that I wasn't getting clear answers until I met Dr. Aftab at Tawam Hospital. Thanks to him and the excellent team at the hospital they were able to cure me in the least invasive way.”
