- University Hospital Sharjah plans to establish a specialised center of excellence for Hernias
Sharjah: 45-year-old lady was diagnosed with three different types of hernias by doctors at the University Hospital Sharjah. Doctors opted to perform a laparoscopic surgery- a minimal invasive procedure and discovered an umbilical (an abnormal bulge felt on the belly button) and epigastric (found in the upper part of the abdomen) hernia, measuring 1.5 cm and 4 cm respectively with divarication of the recti During the surgery, a fat hernia measuring 1 cm was spotted in addition to the two hernias initially discovered.
“When the patient visited us, she complained of severe pain around her abdominal area. She was extremely weak, due to lack of sleep. When we examined her, we detected two abdominal wall bulges and a lot of fat inside the hernia with divarication of the Recti and subsequently suggested a laparoscopic surgery, which proved beneficial in detecting the third hernia. Post the surgery, the patient is recovering well, and is also able to do regular activities with ease,” said Dr Ahmed Abd El Fattah Nada, Senior Consultant General & Laparoscopic Surgery at UHS.
Dr Ahmed Abd El Fattah Nada is the first and only surgeon in the UAE accredited as a Master Surgeon by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) for his commitment to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of hernia care.
SRC develops and administers best-in-class excellence programs for surgeons, hospitals and provides freestanding outpatient facilities throughout the world. These programs are developed through the participation of professional surgical societies, medical associations and leaders covering diverse specialties. The Centre of Excellence (COE) and Master Surgeon (MS) programs offered by SRC promotes universal care across all surgeries and procedures performed. To qualify for this certification, Dr Nada had to meet a set of requirements including performing minimum of 75 surgical hernia procedures annually. Additionally, he was also evaluated based on his knowledge of various equipment and instruments, dedication, operating procedures, co-surgical team and ability to provide education to patients while sustaining a culture of excellence.
“It is a great honour to be accredited as the Master Surgeon from SRC - an internationally recognized healthcare leader. With the abundance of health-related topics in the mainstream news and an increased number of health websites and physicians – patients are always seeking ways to distinguish healthcare providers who deliver high-quality care. The SRC certification, can serve as a guide for patients to select surgeons and facilities that consistently deliver the highest level of care possible,” added Dr Nada.
With Dr Nada being awarded the certification of excellence, University Hospital Sharjah has gotten a step closer to achieving its goal of establishing a specialised center of excellence to treat conditions related to hernia.
