Robert De Niro dismissed fellow actor Jon Voight’s support of Donald Trump as “delusional’ on Sunday, as the two American actors engaged in a war of words over their opposing views of the Republican presidential candidate.

“Jon Voight, he is a nice guy but he is delusional,” De Niro said when asked at a press conference in Dubai about Voight’s defence of Trump in a series of Twitter posts.

Voight took to Twitter after De Niro issued a video on Friday in which he slammed Trump as “blatantly stupid" and said he would “like to punch him in the face” for his controversial stances and remarks during the campaign.

Voight, who is a long-time supporter of the Republican Party, responded by saying he was "so ashamed” of his fellow actor's rant and called on Trump supporters “to express their outrage and anger against De Niro and all of the Republican turncoats against Trump.”

In Dubai, De Niro did not back away from his opposition to Trump.

“The Republican Party has rationalised that this guy (Trump) is sane, that this guy should be president, it is awful, they are going to self-destruct. How can you align yourself with him, it is shameful,” he said.

De Niro, who is visiting the Gulf emirate to promote the Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda and a resort project he is developing there, had spoken to Zawya in an interview on Saturday where he stressed that a Trump victory would not be good for the United States.

“Maybe he isn’t serious but he is being taken serious by certain people, which is disturbing. It shows that people were right about how the country got screwed over by certain elements of Wall Street and the housing and everything and we had the financial depression and people are fed up and people are voting for him and are upset and I understand. But he is not the answer, he is definitely not the answer.”
