A strong recovery by the tourism sector in Egypt will lead to an increase in its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to more than 15%, according to Minister Rania Al-Mashat.

The minister said that the number of visitors have increased by around 40% year-on-year at the end of September and if the trend continues it will mean annual tourist numbers will top 10 million for the first time since 2012, compared with 7.5 million in 2017, the minister was quoted by Reuters.

A recent report by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) noted that economic growth in the southern and eastern Mediterranean region will continue to accelerate this year, as the region’s most countries enjoy the best tourism season since 2010.
