Dubai: Dubai’s World Trade Centre will soon become a cricket venue as G Force Cricket Academy will stage an indoor tournament in the International Convention and Exhibition Centre’s Shaikh Saeed Hall.
The tournament, part of the annual Dubai Sports World series of summer sports tournaments, will be played in a 10-over non-stop format and will start on June 13.
Gopal Jasapara, chief coach of the academy, told Gulf News: “We staged this 10-over tournament till recently as an outdoor event. This year we wanted to do something different and decided to launch an Indoor Premier League with a special set of rules at a special venue.
“We will be staging matches only on Fridays and the tournament will go on till August 30. Sixteen teams will compete, with each team made up of eight players. A total of 31 matches will be played.
“There will be four groups with four teams each, so each team will get three league games. Eight players can play in the match but each team can have a maximum of 12 players.”
The rules allow any batsman who is out to return to the crease after the fall of all the team’s wickets, but each wicket will cost four penalty runs. Each player will bowl one over minimum and two bowlers can bowl two overs.
The entry fee is Dh3,000 and winners will receive a trophy and Dh3,000-worth of gift vouchers, while the runners up can win Dh2,000 of gift vouchers. Top performers will also be presented with prizes.
