MUSCAT -- The opening ceremony of the International Conference on Small Ruminant Production and Health in Arid and Semi-arid Regions was held yesterday at Sultan Qaboos University under the auspices of Shaikh Salim bin Hilal al Khalili, Minister of Agriculture. The conference is organised by the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences of College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, SQU. Speaking on the occasion, SQU Vice-Chancellor, Saud bin Nasser al Riyami said that apart from academic activities, SQU is keen on scientific research and community services too.

This conference has its own positive role in enriching the scientific activities of the university and in supporting the animal and agriculture sector of the Sultanate and other countries, he observed. In his keynote address, Dr Christopher Lu, President, International Goat Association, said small ruminants -- sheep and goat -- play a very important role in the life of the people of arid and semi arid regions of the world including the Sultanate. These household animals influence the culture and everyday life of the people. Regarding the activities of International Goat Association, Dr Lu made it clear that it promotes goat research and development for the benefit of humankind, to alleviate poverty, to promote prosperity and to improve the quality of life.

As many as 50 international delegates from various continents are attending the conference. This includes 10 keynote speakers. An exhibition is being held as part of the conference in which manufacturers and commercial companies dealing with livestock enterprises and related activities display their products and technologies. International Goat Association, Meat and Livestock Australia, University of Western Australia, Ceva Sante Animale, Omani Drug House Co LLC., and Abu Ali Almadani are sponsors of the meet.
