Dubi, May 3rd, 2006 (WAM) -- Dubai Municipality will complete later this year a Dhs27 million project for setting up new waste disposal facilities including four evaporation ponds, landfill unit, wheel wash system and monitoring room in Jebel Ali.
According to Abdullah Ahmed Al Najjar, Head of Projects Construction Section, the project is aimed at enhancing waste disposal facilities in the city. He said the project comprises of four evaporation ponds with a total size of 2349 square meters which will help reduce the liquid waste volume by solar-drying of free liquid contents of the waste water. The ponds will have double-lined system to detain the hazardous waste materials. When the liquid waste in the pond converts into dried sludge due to solar evaporation, the sludge will be removed from the ponds for final disposal in landfill unit. The project, Al Najjar said, also involves construction of a landfill unit with an area of 21600 square meters and a depth of five meters. It will have single liner system to retain the lesser hazardous wastes within the unit. There will be a wheel washing system near the landfill unit for vehicles transporting hazardous waste in order to prevent the spreading of hazardous pollutants on road during the disposal operation. A monitoring room with all necessary facilities will be set up for daily operation. The civic body already operates a landfill facility in Al Qusais and is currently constructing one in Al Warsan area.Waste disposal facilities to be set up in Jebel Ali
