Dubai: Warid Telecom, a subsidiary of UAE-based Abu Dhabi Group, has achieved 2.5 million active subscribers to become the fourth largest telecom operator in two years in Bangladesh - a hugely potential market of 160 million people.
The company recently announced that the firm is ready and well equipped to help Bangladesh implement its digital network, as pledged by the new government, by 2021.
"Digital Bangladesh is an important part of Warid's business vision. We are slowly inching to mark improvements in all spheres of our operation which would actually contribute towards implementation of the project," Muneer Farooqui, Warid Telecom's chief executive, told a press conference to mark two years of operation in Bangladesh.
In celebration of the anniversary, the CEO announced a 50 per cent discount on all Warid to Warid voice and non-voice services for two days.
Warid Telecom launched its commercial operation in Bangladesh on May 10, 2007 as the sixth mobile phone operator after receiving a licence from the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission in December 2005. Warid Telecom is the only mobile phone company in Bangladesh to have paid $50 million (Dh183.5 million) to the government as licence fee.
