A joint project between Oman and Germany to set up a virtual museum of geological wonders in the sultanate, has received US$7,000 from Ford Motor Company's Conservation and Environmental Grant for 2011-12.
World Habitat Society GmbH from Germany and Earth Secrets Company, Oman, plan to launch 'Virtual Museum of Geology', an online museum which will showcase images of geological hot spots with the support of latest technology, where one will discover unique geological formations in the sultanate.
Henning Schwarze, managing partner, World Habitat Society, speaking to Muscat Daily said that a team from Germany was in Oman in January and completed the fieldwork. "The team is back in Germany evaluating data. After thorough analysis, selected images and videos will be put together online," he said.
Schwarze added that the first part of the museum is expected to be launched in March. "We are focusing on Muscat and Duqm region. Duqm is a treasure trove of geological wonders. It is fascinating how fossils and ancient marine life is preserved in the rocks, which is so sensitive that if opened to public it may degenerate. But we don't want the public to miss such natural formations. The project will help spread awareness about the geological and geomorphological processes."
Khalid al Toubi, CEO, Earth Secrets Company, said that his company is involved in promoting geological attractions and developing the concept of geo-parks in Oman in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism.
Commenting on the question about how useful the grant will be, Toubi said, "We work on the concept of sustainable development and whatever the amount, it is going to support our initiative of educating the public and promoting the natural beauty of Oman."
