US ambassador Susan L Ziadeh has complimented the "integrity and talent" shown by American companies doing work in Qatar and urged them to help the country in its preparations to stage the FIFA World Cup 2022. The ambassador joined by Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary general of the Qatar Supreme Committee and representatives of the 2022 Supreme Committee from Qatar met in Los Angeles, California, recently on the first leg of a three-city trade mission to the US to discuss a multitude of opportunities for doing business in Qatar.
The US embassy in Qatar arranged the mission in co-operation with the US Department of Commerce in Doha, and the US Commercial Service. A breakfast meeting kicking off the trade mission was sponsored by the bilateral US-Arab Chamber, an international chamber of commerce that establishes connections between the US and Mena (Middle East/North Africa). During a private reception, the Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa welcomed the Qatari delegation, noting that Los Angeles hosted the World Cup in 1994, and had much to share with the Qataris about the experience. Other remarks highlighted Qatar's intentions while preparing for the 2022 World Cup tournament, incorporating environmental consciousness, responsible waste management, energy preservation, and helping people to think differently about energy use and the Middle East.
The delegation will also stop in Portland and Seattle this week and participate in networking receptions in each city, where they will be matched with US companies in the industries of ICT, healthcare, business services, and travel and tourism. They will also visit stadiums and sports and entertainment facilities in preparation for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup Tournament, scheduled to take place in Doha. "We are very proud to welcome the Qatari delegation, and fully support the US embassy in Qatar, the US Department of Commerce in Doha, and the US Commercial Service team during this trade mission, as they focus on US companies that are well suited to help Qatar prepare for the FIFA World Cup in 2022," said Aida Araissi, founder and president of the US-Arab Chamber of Commerce. To follow up and solidify the relationships initiated during this visit, the chamber plans to lead a trade mission to Qatar in June that will be co-hosted by the US-Qatar Business Council, said Araissi.
