LONDON, April 3 (Reuters) - The British government said on Thursday it was talking to the European Commission about ways to support the country's largest coal producer, UK Coal, which was placed into administration last year.

"HMG (Her Majesty's Government) are currently engaging closely with all relevant parties, including the (European) Commission," said a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Prime Minister David Cameron said earlier on Thursday his government would do everything it could to help the struggling coal miner, which employs around 2,000 staff. The Commission can block state aid in European Union countries when there is a risk it could distort market competition.
