Dubai The UAE has won the right to host the 17th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championships in 2013.

Three Emirati officials were also elected to top positions in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).

At the conclusion of the 19th General Assembly of the AVC in Taipei over the weekend, Ebrahim Abdul Malik, the secretary-general of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW) was elected as an executive vice-president in charge of the West Zone.

Amer Ali, president of the UAE Volleyball Association (UAEVA) became a member of the Development Committee, while Fahad Al Mulla, general secretary of the UAE VA, was elected to the beach volleyball council.

The three officials were received at the Dubai International Airport by a host of top dignitaries from GAYSW and UAE VA yesterday.

“The hosting of the Asian Men’s Senior Championships at the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Sports Complex in Dubai is a feather in the cap for the UAE,” Abdul Malik said.

“The state-of-the-art Hamdan Bin Mohammad Sports Complex is what moved the decision of the general assembly to have Dubai as host to the next championship.”

Tehran is currently hosting to the 2011 Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championships, which concludes on October 3.

Dr Saleh Bin Nasser was unanimously re-elected for another four-year term as president. He took over the job in 2008 after Ji Zhongwei resigned to become FIVB president.

“This is just the start for us,” Ali told Gulf News.

“We now need to work hard and raise the level of volleyball and beach volleyball, not just in the UAE, but in the entire Gulf region.”
