The UAE and Bahrain signed yesterday an agreement to strengthen cooperation in the field of environmen and wildlife protection.

The Abu Dhabi Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (Erwda) and the Bahraini General Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife, cooperated to build capacities, conduct research and hold meetings to protect environment and maintain biodiversity.

Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Managing Director of the Erwda, and Sheikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, president of the Commission, signed the MoU between the organisations.

The event was also attended by directors of the divisions and centres of Erwda including Dr Ahmed Bashir, Director of the environmental education and awareness division, and Dr Amer Al Hashimi, Director of environmental protection division.

Also present was Dr Fred Launay, Director of the UAE branch of the World Wildlife Fund.

"Bahrain is keen to cooperate with the UAE over environmental protection," said Sheikh Abdullah. Al Bowardi said the three-year agreement is the beginning of a profitable cooperation between the two countries.

The two parties agreed to protect endangered species such as dugong, sea turtle, houbara bustard and Arabian oryx.

According to the MoU the two organisations are committed to protect wild plants and support sustainable management of fisheries and fish stock assessment.
