LE BARDO (TAP)- Tunisia is willing to draw inspiration from the Portuguese experience in matters of democratic transition since the Portuguese model has proved efficient with the passing years, affirmed National Constituent Assembly (NCA) Speaker Mustapha Ben Jaafar at the opening Monday in Tunis of a conference on the Portuguese experience in matters of democratic transition.
In his lecture, Former Portuguese President and UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilisations Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio paid tribute to Tunisia which, he said, had managed to make great steps forward on the path of democratic transition, highlighting the similarities between the Revolution of Freedom and Dignity in Tunisia and the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974.
The former Portuguese President gave an overview on the democratic transition process started in his country during the 1970s as well as the social and economic challenges. "The social and political tensions prevailing in Tunisia are quite normal in a transition period, just like in all the countries that lived through similar changes," he affirmed.
