Three contractors are in the bidding race for the main contract of the residential development extension of Al Habtoor City project, according to a senior company official.

The new residential complex, which would run alongside the planned Dubai Water Canal project - a 3km-long mega project that passes under Sheikh Zayed Road - will feature its own marina designed by WS Atkins and will be managed by Asteco Real Estate Services. It will also have three buildings, two 74-floors residential blocks and one 40-storey tower housing up to 1,460 apartments.

A company official told Zawya that three general contractors, Al Habtoor Leighton-Dubai, Kier Construction and El-Seif Engineering Contracting have put in bids and the tender is currently still under valuation. Neither the developer nor contractors revealed any further details on the tender for the main construction contract award.

Al Habtoor Leighton (HLG) is already working on PHI, shoring and piling of the residential complex that is worth USD 1.7 billion, the source had told Zawya earlier. Back in 2012, HLG had also been awarded the main construction contract worth USD 515 million for the hospitality component, including three Starwood-managed hotels with 1,675 hotel rooms and a theatre. Work on this component with a total GFA of 350,000 square meters is underway.

The completion date for the 10 million square feet (BUP) Al Habtoor City, estimated at around USD 3 billion, is expected by 2016.
