Laughter is the same in any language. Believing this, and wanting to promote good theatre, Rangmanch has brought three plays for its multilingual festival of comedies beginning tonight.
Rukmani Rukmani lagna nantar kai kai zaala?, a Marathi play, will be staged tonight. Hera Pheri in Hindi will be performed tomorrow evening; and Saturday evening will see Let's Do It, an English play.
The venue is the Emirates Auditorium of Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dubai.
"All three plays are being performed by the same cast of eight," Shubha Khote, veteran Indian theatre and film personality, said yesterday at a press conference.
The cast includes Shubha herself, her daughter Bhavana Balsaver, Amit Behl, Kranti Redkar, Aashish Roy Basu and Hormazd Chesan. They all belong to Shubhangi Kala Mandir.
The first play focuses on breaking language barriers; the second highlights the chaos that can come out of lying; and the third is a comedy with shades of mystery, she said.
Shubha, Bhavana and Amit all agreed on the popularity of comedy, which always draws an audience.
"It's because people find relief from daily stress," Shubha said. "The audience in Dubai is excellent, very responsive. I like Dubai so much I like coming here again and again."
"If you want entertainment, there is nothing better than watching a comedy," Bhavana added. "All our plays are good, clean comedy. There is no below-the-belt humour or bedroom farce," Behl said.
Amin Rajwani of Rangmanch agreed. "We have always tried to do innovative theatre. Now we present three very wholesome comedies in three languages that families can watch together," he said.
