Hot on the heels of Disney’s announcement of its upcoming summer release, Disney Infinity, comes word that The Incredibles will lead the way.
Infinity is a portal-style game which uses figurines to represent playable characters in the game.
Although Disney are claiming it as an innovative development, Skylanders fans will recognise the premise immediately - if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Mickey Mouse has just paid Activision and Toys for Bob a huge compliment.
To be fair, Disney seem to be taking the concept much further, blending different franchises and fictional worlds, which they’re calling ‘play sets’, into what they’re calling a ‘toy box’ - and they have a huge collection of intellectual properties to choose from: Star Wars, The Avengers (and other Marvel properties), and, of course, homegrown Disney and Pixar characters.
On top of that, they’re promising players will be able to customise and build their own worlds through the toy box. Whether this will go as far as sandbox games such as Minecraft remains to be seen.
Of the franchises Disney has revealed for Infinity so far, The Incredibles tops a short list which also features Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story and Monsters Inc.
In addition to collectible character figurines, Infinity will feature physical boosts and accessories that can aid characters.
“Disney Infinity introduces a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future,” said John Pleasants, co-president, Disney Interactive. “With this innovative approach to gaming, Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”
In addition to the headline console release, Disney Infinity will also have a presence online and on mobile platforms.
