Terracina, Italy: It was a forgettable outing for Team Abu Dhabi, who retired from seventh position on the second lap of the Mediterranean Grand Prix in Terracina on Sunday.
The Emirati crew of Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansouri were able to start the second race thanks to untiring efforts of the technicians after missing out on all three practice sessions, race one and both qualifying stints over the Italian race weekend.
“It was a race against time after the delays in getting the equipment but the team did a fantastic job on the boat to make sure we got to the start and had something to show for the weekend in Italy,” said Al Tayer. “It’s just a shame that we could not finish the race.”
Victory 3’s Arif Saif Al Zafeen and Mohammad Al Marri had won the opening race on Saturday afternoon and started the second 15-lap contest from second position behind pole position winners, Luca Formilli-Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella, in Luca Fendi Racing 10.
Victory 3 led through lap one of race two and headed off into the distance once LF10 retired, but the Victory crew’s challenge took a severe set-back on the 11th lap and they crawled slowly to the end but failed to complete the designated 15 laps.
Christian Zaborowski and Ugur Isik were within one lap of first place in Zabo-Isiklar 91 when they also hit trouble and this opened the door for Italy’s Alfredo Amato and England’s Miles Jennings to take a surprise win in Luca Fendi Racing 8. Poliform 74’s Tarik Oktem and Giampaolo Montavoci were second to give an unlikely outcome to the race result.
