BEIRUT: A ceremony was held in Damascus to honor the families of 15 “civilian and military martyrs” from the ranks of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, state news agency SANA said Sunday.

The ceremony was held in the Midan neighborhood, with Minister of State Joseph Sweid, a party official, on hand, along with the governor of Qunaitra and other SSNP officials.

The report quoted the mother of one of the martyrs, Hasan al-Daif, from the village of Shebaa, south of Damascus, as saying her son’s death represented a “badge of pride.”

SANA indicated that some of those killed were students and members of the SSNP, which has assumed a larger role in action against the opposition.
