A new set of safety regulations has been approved for the GCC region which makes it obligatory for all transport companies to equip their vehicles with devices that monitor speed and traffic violations.
"The installation of these devices will provide information about the freight, weight and its distribution and will guarantee the safety of the transport companies and their drivers," said Saeed Al-Bassami, vice chairman of the Land Transport Commission.
The regulations stress that drivers will not work continuously for 8 hours and that they will rest for next 8 hours before resuming driving.
Drivers will be required to log in the hours of driving and rest in a drivers' log that will contain information such as date, work hours, kilometers clocked, plate number of the vehicle, company's name, driver's signature and any other necessary information.
The regulations require the driver to have working knowledge of Arabic and be able to understand traffic signs in English. The regulations also require drivers not to be below 21 and above 60. They should be healthy and undergo a medical examination every two years at a certified health center that should provide them with a medical report qualifying them to drive heavy vehicles.
The regulations prohibit drivers from smoking at the wheel and strongly advise against driving if there are signs of fatigue or illness.
