MUSCAT -- Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC) has announced the signing of a license agreement with the consortium of Nature Group PLC and Al Ahlia Environmental Services LLC to provide vessels visiting Sohar Port and the anchorage area with waste collection and disposal services in line with MARPOL regulations.
Andre Toet, CEO -- Sohar Industrial Port Company, signed the agreement together with Andreas Drenthen, CEO Nature Group, and M C Jose, Director, Al Ahlia Environmental Services.
The enormous growth of the Port of Sohar and the buildup of the petrochemical cluster have contributed to the need for a facility that not only complies with national and international regulations but also excels in the delivery of services to the maritime industry, SIPC said in a press statement.
With the implementation of this project, centring on the establishment of one of the most modern maritime waste collection, processing and disposal facilities in the world, the Port of Sohar will be in full compliance with the MARPOL convention.
The waste will be collected with a dedicated tanker vessel, servicing visiting ships so they can discharge their waste according to the rules of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The consortium strives to have a collection service available in Q1 2014, while the facility will be up and running by the end of Q1 2015 latest.
The agreement, coupled with the maritime gateway's Green Award label, underscores Port of Sohar's efforts to distinguish itself as a world-class port offering top quality operations.
Nature Group is a global operator of port waste reception facilities, while Al Ahlia is a local waste management company that already has a presence in Oman. Both partners are known for applying the best available and most environmental friendly technologies in their projects and are convinced that Port of Sohar is adding a lot of value to its maritime services cluster with the facility and service implemented.
