GAMMARTH, Dec. 6, 2009 (TAP)- An inter-regional workshop on "Exchanging Experiences in the Area of Eradicating Violence against Women," started on Sunday in Gammarth, under the high patronage of First Lady Mrs. Leila Ben Ali, Chairwoman of the Arab Women Organisation (AWO).
Held on December 6-8 by AWO, jointly with the Ministry of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs, this workshop, which is attended by representatives of governmental organisations and civil society structures from several Arab countries, is meant to devise an Arab strategy to prevent violence behaviours in family and society.
Minister of Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Mrs. Sarra Kanoun Jarraya stressed the importance Tunisia gives to unifying Arab efforts to protect women against violence and improve their conditions as part of a coherent approach of human rights in line with the different international documents and conventions signed in this area.
She reminded of the content of the message extended by Mrs. Leila Ben Ali to the First Ladies of AWO member States, on the World Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, stressing the content of this message which offers a clear vision of the phenomenon of violence against women and emphasises the civilisational, social and moral need to end this phenomenon.
The Head of State, the minister also said, has established a national strategy of prevention against violent behaviours in family and society and involved governmental structures, organisations, associations and components of the civil society in devising, implementing and following up this strategy. In her address, AWO Director-General Wadouda Badrane expressed her deep consideration to the Chairwoman of the Organisation Mrs. Leila Ben Ali, for her keenness to provide necessary support to the good organisation of AWO activities.
She pointed out that combating the phenomena of violence requires taking several actions including sensitisation, research, training and services, adding that the purpose of this workshop is to take joint measures to eradicate the phenomena of violence and make the most of various Arab experiences in this area.
She voiced satisfaction at the strong presence in this workshop of representatives of official national mechanisms and others belonging to civil society institutions, which is likely to enhance chances of success for devising a clear action strategy for the benefit of Arab women.
Several subjects will be discussed at this meeting, particularly women's rights, legal and international frameworks for their protection, foundations of Arab women protection and the general framework of the inter-regional strategy to protect Arab women against violence.
