Abu Dhabi, 11 Nov. 2008 (WAM) - HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the UAE General Women's Union (GWU), Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and Chair of the Arab Women Organisation received here today Princess Lala Salma, wife of the Knig of Morocco and Asma Al Asad, wife of the Syrian President.

During the two meetings, Sheikha Fatima reviewed with Princess Lala Salma and Asma Al Asad topics on the AWO conference agenda.

Meanwhile, Dr Wadouda Badran, Director General of the AWO, expressed appreciation to Sheikha Fatima for her unlimited support to the AWO's activities and for the AWO conference.

In a speech delivered during the inaugural session of the conference, Dr Wadouda said the status of women in the Arab world was far from being perfect despite all efforts to improve it.

"The woman still suffers from insecurity in different levels, beginning from domestic violence to difficulty in accessing basic services such as education and healthcare in some areas, she said.

Dr Wadouda indicated that since its inception the AWO sought to build Arab women's capabilities and to improve their surrounding environments.

She expressed the hope that the conference will arrive at specific way forward for the organisation's activities in the different domains of interest to Arab women.
