SHJARJAH: H. H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council member and ruler of Sharjah on Wednesday attended a symposium titled 'Imam Mohammad Abdo and The Revival of Islamic Intellectualism'.
Egyptian minister of culture Mohammed Saber Arab, in his intervention at the gathering, said Imam Mohamed Abdo was a real philosopher who developed an overarching plan for intellectual, political, social and religious reforms. The discussion highlighted the role of Mohammad Abdo in the development of Islamic thought and his controversial call for the renewal of Islamic law. Mohammed Abdo (1849-1905) is regarded as a pioneer Egyptian jurist, religious scholar and liberal reformer regarded as the founder of Islamic Modernism. Also present at the symposium which was moderated by Emirati researcher Dr Hamad Bin Sarrai were sheikhs, senior officials and cultural and intellectual enthusiasts. The symposium was organized by Sharjah's Department of Culture and Information on the Sharjah International Book Fair which opened Wednesday and will run to 17 November at the Sharjah Expo Centre.Copyright Emirates News Agency (WAM) 2012.
