Sharjah, 2 Feb. 2011 (WAM) - His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah attended this evening a ceremony to launch the 'Pink Convoy' campaign, organised by the Friends of Cancer Patients Society in Sharjah (FCPS).

Also present was H.H. Sheikha Jawahir bint Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Sharjah Ruler's wife, President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs & Honorary Chairperson of the FCPS.

Sheikh Sultan said he was pleased with the onset of the campaign which will help in spreading awareness about cancer and in serving the patients.

He referred to the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research and praised the role it plays in conducting research and studies on oncology, diabetes, heart and communicable diseases.

Sheikh Sultan revealed that the Institute received a total of AED 2.7 million as research grants from different organisations and companies, including the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, Emirates Foundation, Ministry of Health, Sanofi-aventis, Meru and L'Oreal.

Sheikha Jawahir thanked Sheikh Sultan for his continuous support to the FCPS. She also expressed gratitude to the philanthropists who had provided assistance to the patients and to the Society.

She called on the organisations and individuals to donate for the purchase of an AED 12 million cancer detection device which, she said, will contribute significantly in the prevention and treatment of different types of cancer.

An auction was held on seven Arabian horses presented by the Sharjah Ruler in support of the campaign. Proceeds from the sale of the horses reached AED 1.5 million.
