Sharjah: Four people were rescued from a burning building in the Al Madam area, Sharjah, on Wednesday afternoon.

An estimated 20 families were evacuated from the third floor of the four-storey building, after fire broke out around 1.40pm, authorities said. The fire is believed to have started in an apartment on the third floor, Brigadier Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence, told Gulf News.

No injuries were reported. The four rescued Asians were trapped on the balcony. A woman and her son were on the verge of jumping from the building to escape the blaze when they were rescued. Firefighters from Al Madam and the civil defence headquarters tackled the blaze.

“The flames completely destroyed a bedroom and a living room in one of the flats. The building was affected by the dense smoke that was caused by the fire. Fireman assistant Awad Mut’eb Al Kutbi was coincidently nearby, and helped the civil defence team in rescuing the women and her son who tried to jump off the building. There were no injuries,” Lt Colonel Rashid Mohammad Hamarain Al Darmaki, Head of the Al Ain Civil Defence Department said.

Investigations are under way to determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, a car belonging to a female Emirati student burst into flames at 8.30am in Sharjah University parking area on Thursday morning. Firefighters controlled the blaze, Brig Al Suwaidi said. The front of the car was destroyed. No one was injured.
