BEIRUT (Zawya Dow Jones)--The Saudi government plans to spend an estimated 100 billion Saudi riyals ($26.66 billion) on implementing mega infrastructure and housing projects in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi-based Al Riyadh daily reports Saturday citing an official.
The infrastructure ventures include projects including the construction of roads and restroom complexes, and the expansion of open areas, roads and streets, Osama Al Bar, Mecca's mayor, said according to the paper.
The Mecca municipality has handed over a plot of land with an area covering more than 300 million square meters in the southern part of the city to the housing ministry that will be used for residential projects, the daily cites Al Bar as saying. The municipality also plans to deliver additional sites to the ministry, he added.
Al Bar said, according to Al Riyadh, that the municipality has allocated one site and will allocate two others for housing projects in partnership with the private sector and that it also plans a project to build residential units for people working in local companies and institutions.
