Saudi Arabia plans to construct more than 20,000 houses in its southwestern Asir province as part of nearly 160 housing projects to be executed across the oil-rich Gulf Kingdom, a Saudi official was quoted on Tuesday as saying.
"20 housing projects are in the pipeline in Asir and will be distributed to citizens either as ready built houses or as land along with loan facilities," Mohammed Al Zamei, Housing Ministry Undersecretary, told Sabq, an Arabic language daily.
Zamei said that two projects have already been launched while 18 others would soon be awarded, adding that the 20 projects encompass a combined area of 18.3 million square metres across the capital city Abha as well as Bisha, Khamis Mushait and other heavily populated areas of Asir.
One of the largest projects, dubbed Abha North, a large mixed-use project will involve the construction of 2,300 housing units over an area of five million square metres.
Other projects in Asir include Bisha North (1,000 houses), Bisha South (993 houses), Bisha Al-Alaya (2,678 units), Mahayel Asir (2,482 houses), Dahran South (571 houses) and Nammas (458 units), Zamei added.
