RIYADH, 8 February 2007 -- The World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which seeks to offer scholarships to young Muslims from across the Islamic world.

The agreement was signed in Riyadh by Dr. Syed Arabi Idid, president of the IIUM, and Dr. Saleh Al-Wohaibi, the secretary-general of WAMY. Speaking after the signing ceremony, Dr. Al-Wohaibi told Arab News that in addition to supporting Islamic cultural programs, the agreement would help create awareness about Islam in wider society.

The agreement aims to promote cooperation between the two sides in science and the organizing of various cultural activities. It also seeks to facilitate the enrollment of both male and female students for different courses at the IIUM. The cooperation program would also help rehabilitate Muslim youth, facilitate the organizing of cooperative seminars and other programs of mutual concern, besides engaging in research and development.

In the information field, both sides have agreed to exchange newspapers and magazines to promote a sense of broader understanding. The agreement also calls for cooperation in the scientific and cultural fields both through the media and the Internet.

Dr. Idid lauded the role of WAMY in helping students from within the Kingdom and abroad, and for taking the initiative in helping them overcome social problems.

Al-Wohaibi thanked the president of the IIUM and the Malaysian government for offering scholarships to students in the Islamic world. He pointed out that WAMY's efforts were part of a drive to help young Muslims from around the world.
