RIYADH (Zawya Dow Jones)--Saudi Arabia will start the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on Monday along with most other Arab countries, state media news agencies reported Saturday.

Religious councils in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Yemen and Lebanon said the moon's crescent wasn't sighted after nightfall Saturday, and so Sunday would be the last day of the month preceding Ramadan.

Others countries have yet to announce when they will start the holy month. They are expected to follow the Saudi lead.

Muslims look for the new moon to proclaim the start of Ramadan, during which they abstain from food and drink during daylight hours.
