The Undersecretary of Public Works Affairs at the Ministry of Works, Nayef Omar Al Kalali, has announced that the marine sand dredging project, which would pump sand to the local construction market, would be completed by the month-end.

The announcement was made following a visit to the marine sand mine borrow area, 20 kms north of Manama main island.

Al Kalali was accompanied by Sayyed Bader Al Alawi, head of special projects at the Roads Projects and Maintenance Directorate, T. J. Blum, regional manager Middle East at Boskalis Westminster and Saw Vyapak, resident engineer at Hyder Consulting which is in charge of supervision, and representatives from Dutch company, Boskalis Westminster, which is implementing the project.

The delegation visited the site on board the Hopper Dredger Coastway.

The Coastway captain, I. Blokpoel, explained the technique of dredging, transporting of sand on the Hopper Dredger and pumping it into specific locations in Manama and Muharraq.

He also referred to the environmental requirements adopted in locating suitable borrow areas. Al Kalali toured various parts of the project and inspected the technological methods used in the operation.

The sand dredging project began this April and 250,000 cubic metres of sand has been pumped to the North Manama Causeway project leading to the Bahrain Financial Harbour.

Work on providing the second consignment of another 250,000 cubic metres has commenced in Busaiteen, where 70 per cent of the project has been completed.

"Sand pumping into the local market will start soon. This is an effort by the ministry to control sand prices, following directives from the Cabinet," Al Kalali said.

He said 90 per cent of work on the North Manama Causeway leading to the Bahrain Financial Harbour had been completed and the remaining work is expected to be over by mid-July.
