KUWAIT: The names of companies and local suppliers that have been accused of smuggling expired food items into the country will be announced shortly. This step is part of the measures taken by the Kuwait Municipality to tackle the issue. It announced that maximum punishments would be accorded to suppliers that flooded the local market with food products that are unfit for human consumption.
This announcement was made by General Director Ahmad Al-Subaih while addressing reporters after holding a meeting with managers of the municipality branches at the country's governorates that have focused on this subject. "Recommendations were made to intensify raids at stores and restaurants around the country," Al-Subaih said. He further explained that any store that is found guilty of selling inedible food products will be suspended immediately, before the commerce ministry is contacted to cancel comm
ercial licenses, reported Al-Qabas.
Moreover, the director announced that Municipality centers will be set up across the country's uninhabited areas to nab roaming vendors who sell food products that fall short of basic health and quality requirements, to campers. Inspectors from the Municipality recently raided two warehouses in Shuwaikh that stored ten tons of expired food items.
In a statement made recently to the press, team leader Tariq Al-Qattan explained that the items confiscated during the operations include canned meat, candy, infant formula, cheese, cooking oils, as well as large quantities of honey and olives. The Head of the Capital Governorate's municipality branch also told reporters that the two warehouses were unlicensed, and would be shut down after punishing violators.
