BEIRUT: Two men were wounded on Tuesday night when an Inerga-type rocket-propelled grenade hit the Al-Shamal street that separates Tripoli’s neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
The state-run National News Agency (NNA), identified one of the wounded as Fouad al-Bshellawi.
Mostly Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen, inhabited by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, have been the scene of clashes and security incidents in recent years.
Tripoli Mufti Sheikh Malek al-Shaar said on Monday the residents of both neighborhoods will not be dragged into strife.
The Sunni cleric accused “certain groups” of standing behind the incident in an attempt to stir “unwanted tensions among residents.”
Meanwhile, a personal dispute between two people from the Awwad and al-Miqdad families led to gunfire in Beirut’s southern suburb of Burj al-Barajneh, causing the death of Ali al-Miqdad.
The army cordoned off the area and began pursuing the perpetrators. Media reports on Tuesday said tensions were high in the area with Miqdad’s family demanding the Awwad family hand over the murderer.
Members of Miqdad’s family torched two houses in the area reports added. – The Daily Star
