The start of the Lahore Ring Road project is likely to cause massive traffic disruption in the city, especially in the flow of traffic entering and leaving the city.

With the start of Lahore Ring Road in the beginning of the coming month, the government has no option but to close completely or partially the important entry and exit points in the northwestern side of Lahore. The Communication and Works Department is seemingly unable to determine how to ensure smooth vehicular movement in northwest Lahore when construction on the Niazi Chowk interchange commences from November 1.

The consultant has proposed the closure of Old Ravi Bridge, New Ravi Bridge and Saggian Bridge for vehicles coming or going outside Lahore for around six months.

However, experts believe this plan is not feasible as important entry and exit points cannot be closed to traffic for more than six months and necessary amendments have to be made to minimise public inconvenience.

The Punjab government is devising a strategy to minimise public inconvenience by considering alternate options and plans to save the people from traffic jumbles. The Department has sought recommendations from the City District Government and traffic engineers to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the constriction process.

The diversion plan proposes closure of Bund Road, Ravi Road, Outfall Road, New Ravi Bridge, Old Ravi Bridge and Saggian Bridge to facilitate construction of the flyover at Niazi Chowk.
