Beet cultivation has been revived across 3,000 hectares of farmlands of Dezful, Andimeshk and Shoush in Khuzestan province.

Ali Karami, an expert of Dezful Agricultural Jihad Department, said an agreement has been signed between the department and Isfahan Sugar-Cube Factory to revive the cultivation of beet in this southwestern province, the Persian daily Iran wrote.

"The crop will be transferred to Isfahan factory for producing sugar and sugar-cube," he said. Abdolreza Mehranzadeh, the head of Dezful Agricultural Jihad Department, said beet cultivation covered 1,300 hectares of Dezful lands.

He said some of the benefits of reviving beet cultivation in northern parts of Khuzestan are as follows: promoting crop rotation, increasing soil fertility, controlling weeds and generating revenues for farmers.

Mehranzadeh predicted that 80,000 tons of beetroots would be harvested from the provincial farms.

The closure of Dezful Sugar-Cube Factory led to the suspension of beet cultivation in the region in the year 2000.

Khuzestan was considered a major hub of beet cultivation with an annual production of 500,000 tons in the 1990s.
