Doha - Qatar horse racing added one more feather in its cap yesterday when it signed a sponsorship agreement with France Galop to host the world's richest race on turf in October this year in Paris.

Qatar's Racing and Equestrian Club (REC) and France Galop signed the sponsorship agreement yesterday for holding the 4m euro ($5.8m) horse race for thoroughbreds on October 4 and 5 in Longchamp Racecourse, Paris. The agreement is for holding the event till 2012. "The prize money of the Qatar Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe race willincrease from 2m euros last year to 4m euros ($5.8m). This will be the richest race on turf in the world," said Emanuelle Bour-Poitrinal, General Manager of France Galop.

France Galop is the governing body of flat and steeplechase horse racing in France. It boasts of a membership of more than 9,500 horse owners, trainers, jockeys and breeders. France Galop organises more than 6,500 races in France.

"We are also happy to announce that Qatar Arabian World Cup will be held at Saint Cloud racecourse on October 3. It will carry a purse of 350,000 euros making it the richest Arabian race in the world," she added. Qatar had hosted, for the first time, Pure Arabian horse races at Longchamp Racecourse in September last year after a partnership with France Galop. REC Vice Chairman Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani said REC was delighted to be associated with France Galop.
