DOHA - In a first, Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation) has deployed a mobile substation to tackle emergency power outages or tripping happening in any part of the country.
The 1,000 kv (kilo volts) ampere substation is capable of supplying uninterrupted power from the general network to customers during maintenance works at various places throughout the year.
The mobile substation is being controlled by Kahramaa's Electricity Networks Affairs (ENA).
"The high-tech mobile substation will ensure a continuous and reliable electric supply in cases of maintenance or planned interruptions. It will also cover failures which might takes place in any of the existing stations and support civil maintenance works at different stations. The mobile unit can substitute for any substation exposed to defect or accident until the completion of necessary repairs and reconnecting it with the general electric work," said Kahramaa's public relations department.
Kahramaa implemented the mobile substation concept in response to the need to ensure and control continuous electrical services to its customers in case of electricity interruptions. Using this mobile unit, the electrical current can be restored to customers in a short period of time.
"Safety and environmental factors are Kahramaa's prime concerns. Hence, the ENA had carried out a series of tests to ascertain the efficiency and performance of the substation. Satisfied with the test results, Kahramaa has decided to introduce more mobile stations in a range of size and capacity," department officials said.
Of late, there were reports that the number of power outages caused by the construction related accidents had increased manifold. Kahramaa itself had admitted that a total of 558 power outages occurred all over Qatar last year.
