DOHA: The prospects for enhanced cooperation in the fields of air travel and tourism between Qatar and Pakistan were explored at a meeting of top officials of the two countries in Islamabad recently.

The matter came up for detailed discussions at the reception hosted by Chairman of the Pakistan Senate, Muhammed Mian Somroo, for the Qatar Airways’ delegation led by its Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker, for the official launch of the airline’s Islamabad service.

Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Abdulla Falah Abdulla Al-Dosari, as well as Qatar Airways General Manager Commercial, Mohamed Saleh Fakhri and Qatar Airways Senior Manager Commercial Operations - East Ali Al Rais, also attended the event.

Mian Somroo was the chief guest at a grand function organised by Qatar Airways to mark the launch of its Islamabad flight as well as the formal opening of its office in the Pakistani capital.

Both sides felt that there was ample scope for increased cooperation in the fields of tourism and travel, particularly at a time when the tourism industry has emerged as the largest industry in the world. The industry provides jobs to millions of people.

Akbar Al Baker who is also chairman of Qatar Tourism Authority, promised to support Pakistan’s endeavour to promote its tourist attractions, which he felt have great potential for attracting up-market tourists from all over the world. He said that as Qatar Airways will be flying to 70 destinations spread across the five continents by the end of next year, the airline can provide excellent connections to the people of Pakistan to major cities around the world. Also Qatar Airways will be able to fly in tourists and business travelers from across the world to Pakistani cities, he said.

Currently, Qatar Airways, one of the fastest growing airlines in the world, offers 13 direct flights between Qatar and Pakistan every week. Qatar Airways flies to all the four major cities of Pakistan; Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar.

Qatar Airways, which has been widely acclaimed as a quality airline, can truly serve the people of Pakistan as the country’s window to the rest of the world, Akbar Al Baker pointed out.

The opening ceremony of the Qatar Airways office in Islamabad was also attended by Pakistan’s Minister of Tourism, Rais Munir Ahmed and Qatar’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Abdullah Falah Abdullah Al Dosari.
