The Palace of the Mirage the English name for the Qasr Al Sarab desert retreat being built near Liwa - is becoming a reality.

Construction work on the luxury resort in the Empty Quarter is progressing well, says the firm behind the project, Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC).

The retreat is being built seven kilometres from Liwa's main Hamim Highway and 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport. It is set against a backdrop of the Rub Al Khali's dunes - among the highest in the world.

The up-market getaway will feature 140 guest rooms in 10 low-rise blocks, 10 royal pavilion villas and 42 additional villas as well as a spa themed along the lines of the traditional Hammam healing baths.

"With the retaining walls that define the structure of the complete development, the project is on course for its planned opening in September 2009," said Lee Tabler, CEO of TDIC.

"We have already embarked on international marketing of this singular destination to establish the resort's unique MICE and leisure credentials.

"We intend Qasr Al Sarab to be the last word in elegance and opulence as well as providing a memorable desert experience. It will be an outstanding tribute to its surrounding lands for people who appreciate tranquility and culture."

An "oasis experience" will be available alongside the resort, complete with a waterhole, traditional falaj irrigation system and indigenous animals grazing.

Guests will be able to sample traditional desert pursuits such as falconry and camel riding and a range of tours and safaris will be available.

The South African-UAE joint venture ALEC-Al Jaber has the construction contract for the development, for which Turner & Townsend has been appointed project manager.
