AMMAN - A spokesperson for the Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) stated that the Jordanian government will complete the privatization of the national carrier by the end of the current year and that the Investment Unit at the Social Security Corporation (SSC) has shown interest in the transaction.
He also said that the SSC has sent a letter of interest to the Airline to buy shares in RJ. The RJ restructuring and privatization process began in 1998 and at the moment, 74 percent of total shares are slated for privatization.
The privatization aims at adding to the role of the private sector in economic activities. The Jordanian government will possess 26 percent of RJ shares and will preserve the veto in the company's general assembly.
The national privatization program provides potential investment opportunities not only in RJ, EDCO, IDECO but also in the Civil Aviation Authority, Queen Noor Civil Aviation Technical College, Aqaba Railway, Jordan Post Company, Jordan Silos and Supply General Company, Jweideh Flour Mill Company, Shabsogh Complex, Real Estate Co., Tower Building, Light Railway (Amman-Zarqa), expansion of Queen Alia International Airport, border centers and the Industrial and Hazardous Medical Waste Project.
